Explore the outdoors and local waterways with a visit to Murphy Creek Conservation Area. Tucked along the shores of the St. Johns River and Murphy Creek in Putnam County, this 4,755-acre St. Johns River Water Management District property offers a variety of recreational activities while also protecting water resources.

The District began purchasing the parcels that make up Murphy Creek Conservation Area in 1987 to improve water quality, maintain natural water flows and protect against flooding by preserving the important wetlands in the area. District lands protect and preserve water resources while also safeguarding plant and wildlife habitat and providing spaces for public recreation and environmental education.

A true highlight of the property is Murphy Island. Accessible only by boat, the island features a floating dock, picnic area and campsite. Visitors can spend the day exploring more than 6 miles of trails that meander the island. Home to a variety of wildlife, it’s possible to see wading birds, gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, bobcats or foxes. The upland area along the river provides a spectacular river view and scenic photo opportunities. For those who want to experience the island overnight, there is a primitive campsite (advance reservation required).

“Murphy Island is a great place for a day trip or overnight stay, but don’t forget your bug spray,” says Tyler Mosteller, the District’s North Region land manager. “You can dock your boat, hop off and explore while enjoying the wonderful river breeze.”

The inland portion of Murphy Creek Conservation Area has a parking area and another trail for hiking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. This part of the property is currently undergoing natural community restoration work in the uplands. The majority of the conservation area is a floodplain swamp and can be quite wet at times.
