Closure today at Thomas O. Lawton Recreation Area for controlled burn

PALM BAY, Fla., March 23, 2016 -- A 9,000-acre prescribed fire today at Three Forks Marsh Conservation Area in Brevard County has temporarily closed Thomas O. Lawton Recreation Area -- including the boat ramp -- to public use for safety reasons. The burn's purpose is wildfire fuel reduction and maintenance of fire-dependent ecosystems. The burn was started by aerial ignition.

MAITLAND, Fla., March 28, 2016 -- A recent partnership between the St. Johns River Water Management District and the City of Ocala has saved over 4 million gallons of water in 5 months. The savings were achieved after implementing a water-savings WaterSmart program in October 2015 across 5,000 residential utility customers.

Bank improvements under way in Canal 1 in Palm Bay

The current project follows pump upgrades in November at the west end of the canal, where a water quality improvement project is sending hundreds of millions of gallons of water to the Upper St. Johns River Basin.

The St. Johns River Water Management District partnered with Lake County to build the new 2.0-mile trail connection that joins the Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead with the Apopka Loop Trail and provides expanded opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking and bicycling.

Steamboats dock at district-owned property

MAITLAND, Fla., April 7, 2016 -- Visitors to Haynes Creek in Leesburg were treated to an unusual site recently as nearly a dozen steamboats passed through the Burrell Lock and Dam. Situated on the St. Johns River Water Management District's property, the Burrell Lock and Dam were constructed in 1957 to assist in flood control as well as the passage of fishing boats and pleasure crafts between Lake Eustis and Lake Griffin.

Tips for publishing of Notice of Agency Action by the permittee

When you receive a copy of your environmental resource permit (ERP) you will see — in addition to the date of issuance, the authorization statement and the list of conditions — noticing information that includes a Notice of Rights, Notice of Agency Action and a list of newspapers. This noticing information appears at the end of the permit document and, like the permit conditions, is very important and should be read and considered.
