All permits issued by the district contain permit conditions that govern the construction and operation of your surface water management system or reference the water use authorized by the permit. Some permits may also contain conditions requiring submittal of certain documents within specific time frames or at regular intervals for a particular time frame. Closure expected Monday at Thomas O. Lawton Recreation Area for controlled burn

PALM BAY, Fla., March 18, 2016 -- A 9,000-acre prescribed fire at Three Forks Marsh Conservation Area in Brevard County is expected to temporarily close Thomas O. Lawton Recreation Area -- including the boat ramp -- to public use for safety reasons on Monday, March 21. The burn's purpose is wildfire fuel reduction and maintenance of fire-dependent ecosystems.

Volunteers to track butterflies on district property

MAITLAND, Fla., March 22, 2016 -- Each month, a team of dedicated volunteers visits the St. Johns River Water Management District's Lake Apopka North Shore to monitor and map butterfly activity. The group tracks each type of butterfly species as well as the number of eggs, larvae and pupae observed. In February, volunteers observed 21 butterfly species, including Black Swallowtail, Ceraunus Blue and White Peacock.
