Controlled burn at Orange Creek Restoration Area in Marion County

MAITLAND, Fla., Jan. 25, 2017 — The St. Johns River Water Management District is conducting a 209-acre prescribed burn today at the Orange Creek Restoration Area in Marion County, immediately north of the parking area on County Road 318. During the burn, parking and trail access will be closed at this location, but visitors can access the property at the S.E. 219 Avenue trailhead. The purpose of the burn is to reduce hazardous fuel accumulations and the maintenance of fire-dependent ecosystems. New minimum flow protects Outstanding Florida Spring, manatees

PALATKA, Fla., Feb. 1, 2017 -- Manatee protection is getting a boost today when new water resource protection rules for Ponce de Leon Springs, set by the St. Johns River Water Management District, become effective. In mid-December 2016, the district's Governing Board approved rule amendments to adopt minimum flows for the spring in Volusia County.

MAITLAND, Fla., Feb. 10, 2017 — The St. Johns River Water Management District is conducting a 471-acre prescribed burn today at the Sunnyhill Restoration Area in Marion County, approximately one mile south of Nelson’s Outdoor Resort. The purpose of the burn is to reduce hazardous fuel accumulations and the maintenance of fire-dependent ecosystems. The fire was set by aerial ignition. Aerial ignition allows district staff to ignite fires more quickly, which results in faster burnout and less lingering smoke. PALATKA, Fla., Feb. 14, 2017 -- Water use from approximately 96 percent of permitted groundwater allocations across 18 counties is measured and reported to the St. Johns River Water Management District and verified by state-of-the-art science. District staff presented an overview of the district's Consumptive Use Permitting (CUP) program and methodologies used to estimate the total water use within the district at Tuesday's board meeting, the first of a series of informational presentations to correct recent published inaccuracies.
